The finished quilt measures approximately 36”x42” including a border top and bottom
Seam allowance throughout is ¼ inch
Fabric used :- Make a Wish by Lewis & Irene. There are 15 fabrics in this range and all 15 were used in this quilt. 25cm of each fabric is required if using the full width of fabric or 15 fat quarters. This is enough for the quilt top (plus border), the pieced backing and the pieced binding. 3.75m fabric is ample for this size quilt.
Squares – cut squares 4 ½” then cut each square diagonally to give half square triangles. Squares can be larger if desired but keep a check on how much fabric is used. Note:- don’t be tempted to cut too many squares at a time especially if using full widths of fabric. Measure carefully to avoid wastage – if using full widths of fabric, you might want to cut the fabric into fat 1/8th pieces especially if the remaining larger pieces will be used for a pieced backing. This also applies if using fat quarters as the backing is made using the remaining larger pieces of fabric.
Sort fabrics into light and dark shades. Sew together a light and dark triangle to form a square, continuing until enough squares have been made. Lay out the blocks as shown in the diagram below, keeping the darkest fabrics for the centre and points if an accent colour is required. When happy with the layout, sew blocks into strips, then sew the strips together. The quilt size can be extended by adding sashing or using the leftover fabric to make borders.
Backing Sew together some of the larger pieces of the remaining fabric together until the back measures at least 4”(10cm) larger than the quilt top.
Quilting -the quilt was hand quilted in the ditch to accentuate the diamond pattern, using cotton perle no. 8
