Scrap Busting Sew-Along - Week 1
Welcome to the Scrap Busting Sew-along! It's officially starting.
We'll be sewing our scraps over the next 6 weeks to make my Scrappy Blooms quilt. You can find all the information here on the website, via my newsletter, and supporting information on my social media accounts. Every Thursday I'll release more information so that we can sew-along together and make this fun colourful quilt.
This week is sorting your scraps. You'll need a centre colour for the very middle of the rose. I chose to keep the centre fabric the same throughout. This provides a link from bloom to bloom. It should be a contrasting colour from your petals. In my original quilt, I used a cinnamon colour. Browns work really well with the colour palette I have chosen as they are dark enough but not so much that they distract from the colourful petals. For example, a black centre would have provided contrast, but would have dominated the block.
Then you will need to make three colour piles for your blooms. In the original quilt I used Red, Orange and Pink. These colours represent the inner petals, the middle of the petals and the outer edges of the petals. These colours will represent the change in colours due to light and shadows. These can be any colour you choose, but aim for the three colours to sit nicely together, a light, medium and dark. Within these colours I mix a lot of different patterns and shades. Be brave and put as many different fabrics you can onto the pile. Keep the amount of fabric manageable - see if it can still fit on your cutting mat.
Sizes of scraps is important too. You'll need a mix of shapes and sizes to make this really effective. Some small 2" pieces and some longer pieces. Maybe even some fat eighths! Just look at this photo below. I've added miss-cut hexagons, jelly rolls strips and off cuts from cushion making. It all works and makes lots of interesting patterns.
