Scrapbusting Sew-along - Scrappy Blooms Week 3

Scrapbusting Sew-along - Scrappy Blooms Week 3

Getting started. You'll need your ruler, a cutting tool and for my top tip... a cup of water! A little bit of water on your finger goes a long way to avoid jumping up and down for an iron. I don't want to saturate my fabric as that would make it impossible to cut, but I do want a little bit along the seam. I do have my Best Press on standby as some of my older scraps are pretty unforgiving at times, but on the whole, a dab of water is enough.

Let's take a moment to remind us what we're trying to achieve. Here's two blooms with two very different palettes. Both made in the same way. We're using the 3 chosen colours and working our way out. Sometimes I will use a little of each colour, sometimes one colour will dominate, keep mixing it up for unique flowers. As we move outwards, the petals get larger, just like an opening bloom. (note: if your centres feel large, you can either trim them smaller, or focus on this next step earlier.)

We want to give the illusion that the petals are curving around the centre. Don't be frightened to cut through chunks of your petals to avoid the blooms becoming square or seams starting to land in the same place each 'row'. As you go outwards use the same material in more than one place, so that the the two edges join to form one petal. As seen in the photo below. If you're not sure if it's working, offer up a background fabric and step back. Its surprising just stepping away from the table lets you looks at your block with 'new' eyes. Each bloom should vary in shape and size, but you are working towards a shape between 7" and 10". No bigger or you will be creating a new block size and won't be able to follow along at the next step. Thats it for this week. Enjoy making your blooms grow!
